The Founder
In 1965, Ms Ursula Khow and her sister, Ms Teresa Hsu founded and set
up "Welfare Resthome" for the destitutes at No. 27 Jalan Payoh
Lai, Singapore.
Since the Home then could shelter only 16 destitute people, there was
a need for the expansion. Ms Khow approached Mr. George Gray Thompson
for assistance and together with a group of friends from Rotary Club,
Mr. Thompson formed the Society for the Aged Sick which took over "Welfare
Resthome" on 14 February 1968 and renamed it "Home for The
Aged Sick". The first President of the Society was Mr. Prithvi
Sachdev with Mrs. Joyce Yook-Lan Horsley as Hon. Secretary and Mr. Robert
Archibald Vokes as Hon. Treasurer. The two Deputy Presidents were Dr.
Gwee Ah Leng and Mr. Robert Kilgour Booker and the Committee Members
were Mr. Milton Tan Hong Moh, Mr. George Gray Thompson, Mr. David Phoa
Thai Seng, Mr. Tan Tock Peng, Mr. Ronald Francis Jenkins, Mr. Ee Peng
Liang.
On her retirement from teaching in 1968, Ms Khow donated her piece of
land at 27 Jalan Payoh Lai to the Society and the Society took over
the overall management of the land and building. Four one-storey houses
with a common kitchen were then planned to cater for 100 residents.
The foundation stone was laid on 30 August 1969 by Puan Noor Aishah,
wife of our first President Yusof Ishak, and the Home was officially
opened by Mrs. B.J. Sheares, wife of our second President Sheares on
6 November 1971. With the ever growing waiting list of prospective residents,
the extension to accommodate more residents was done twice and in 1983,
the Home had 9 wards to accommodate 180 residents at full capacity.
In 1991, the Society was notified by the government of the compulsory
acquisition of the land at 27 Jalan Payoh Lai and as a result the new
Home with the capacity of 192 beds was built in the current location
at 130 Hougang Avenue 1. The cost of the construction and equipping
of this new Home of the Society for the Aged Sick was borne in the main
by the Ministry of Health for which the Management Committee expresses
its heartfelt gratitude.
To meet increasing demand, the Home constructed an additional 4th storey
to the existing 3-storey building in 2006 and the capacity was expanded
to 244 beds.

Our Services
The Home provides shelter and companionship for the sick, especially
those who are too weak and poor to provide for their daily needs like
personal hygiene, regular meals, daily exercise and taking their medication
as prescribed by their doctor. Thus, it only renders basic daily needs
and does not cater for acute cases and those who require more specialized
medical services and facilities. Being a non-profit, charitable organization,
65% of the residents are destitute and the remaining 35% of the residents
are from low income families and deserving cases.
